A last-hole gamble backfired on Rory McIlroy as Dustin Johnson stormed into a commanding lead in the second round of the WGC-HSBC Champions.
McIlroy held a two-shot lead after an opening 65 in Shanghai and was three clear yesterday when he followed five straight pars with birdies at the sixth, seventh and eighth.
He came up short and took a penalty drop before missing the par putt to leave him on seven-under-par.
That left him five behind Johnson, who had a record-equalling 63.
McIlroy said: “It was disappointing, frustrating. I hit a lot of sloppy shots on the back nine. I missed the last six greens in a row.”
